Hypnotherapy FAQs

Hypnosis is a safe and natural psychological phenomenon that many of us experience spontaneously in everyday life. In a therapeutic environment, hypnosis can be a powerful way to transform the thoughts that lead to unwanted beliefs or habits. Hypnotherapy can help you to stop smoking, assist with losing weight and help to combat anxiety, stress and phobias, and much more.

Yes. You will be in full control and will be able to hear and remember what was said during your session. The therapist cannot make you do anything you do not want to do, and you will be able to wake up whenever you want.

Hypnotherapy is completely safe and there are no adverse side effects.

Most people can be hypnotised under the right conditions. Hypnosis requires a willingness to be hypnotised, and a therapist cannot make you do anything against your will.

No. Hypnosis is not the same as being asleep. Have you ever relaxed on a beach and felt yourself drifting off, not quite asleep and still able to hear the sounds around you, and able to wake fully if you wanted? Hypnosis feels much like that.

I cannot ethically claim a success rate, and it is strictly forbidden to do so by many hypnotherapy associations. The success rate of any type of therapy would have to be independently verified to be meaningful in any way, and it is impossible to do this. There is no guarantee with any type of therapeutic or medical intervention and to claim a percentage success rate would be unethical. Hypnotherapy is no different - I do not have a 'magic wand' that can cure anything and, as with other medical conditions, clients can experience relapses.

Hypnotherapy may be able to help you even if you have tried other methods of quitting in the past. Please visit the Stop Smoking with Hypnotherapy page for more information.

People change and therapists work in different ways - just because hypnotherapy didn't work for you in the past does not mean that it will not work now. I would be happy to discuss any concerns you might have when you contact me.

Hypnotherapy works best when sessions are tailored to the individual client. I recognise that everyone is different, and that an approach that might work for you would not necessarily work for somebody else. For that reason, I do not have generic hypnotherapy CDs available. However, every client will receive a free CD at their first full session, where appropriate and where it will assist you in between sessions.

As every person is different, there is no way to guarantee how many sessions you will need. Mild addictions and phobias might only require one or two sessions. Some deep-seated issues might take several sessions before results are obvious. Many factors can affect the number of sessions you will need, such as how receptive you are to hypnotherapy, and your own levels of motivation. I offer an intensive 'Stop Smoking' therapy in one single session, but an average of 4 to 6 sessions is not uncommon.
