A personal, practical approach to therapy

John Taylor, psychotherapist and clinical hypnotherapist

Hello, I’m John.

I’m a psychotherapist and clinical hypnotherapist. I’ve been working therapeutically with people for more than a decade, and one of the things I value most about the work is that no two people arrive with exactly the same story.

For many people, coming to see me is their first experience of therapy. You do not need to arrive knowing the right terminology, knowing which therapeutic approach you need, or having worked out exactly why you feel the way you do.

My job is to listen, understand what is happening and work with you to find a useful way forward.

How I work

My style is warm, practical and down-to-earth. Therapy with me is a conversation rather than something that is done to you. Sometimes we will spend time understanding experiences and patterns. At other times the work may be more focused on changing a particular response, feeling or behaviour.

I use an integrative approach, drawing on psychotherapy, counselling, clinical hypnotherapy and focused approaches such as BWRT® where appropriate. I do not believe in forcing everybody through the same method or programme.

Understanding the expectation behind the response

One question I often find useful is: What have you come to expect will happen next? After an unpleasant or frightening experience, we may begin anticipating it, monitoring for warning signs or avoiding situations that feel risky. Those reactions can sometimes become part of what keeps a difficulty going. Understanding that pattern can help us decide where to work.

What matters is not simply how you feel in the consulting room, but the change you notice in your day-to-day life: greater freedom, more confidence or more choice about how you respond. We agree realistic goals together.

A safe, confidential space

Anything you share is treated sensitively and confidentially, within the usual ethical and legal limits of therapeutic practice. I aim to provide a non-judgemental environment in which you can talk openly and work at a pace that feels manageable.

Personal

Therapy is tailored around your needs rather than an off-the-shelf script.

Collaborative

We decide together what matters, what we are working towards and what approach makes sense.

Practical

Understanding matters, but so does helping life feel and work differently outside the therapy room.
